Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did you switch to 2% milk at 18 months?

I forgot to ask about this at my babies' appointment.  It's not a huge deal, it would just be nice if they drank 2% milk.  We have to have 3 different kinds of milk in our fridge - whole for the babies, 2% for my oldest DD, and fat free for DH.  It's just kind of a pain.  One of my babies weighed just under 24 pounds, the other just over 24 pounds, at 18 months.  I think that put them in the 25th %ile.  Anyway, did anyone ask if their LOs could drink 2% milk?  TIA!

  • Check with your pedi to see what they recommend.  If you forgot to ask at their recent appointment, just give them a call.

We never did whole milk for DD.  She started out at 2% when she started drinking it around 11 months, and we just

  • At our 15 month appointment, the doctor said that he should have whole milk until 2 years because it was good for brain development.

  • 24 lbs at 18 months puts them over the 50th percentile (~70th).

If they are otherwise healthy and you don't have concerns about them getting enough fat, and if it really is an inconvenience to have 3 kinds of milk in the house, then I think it

  • We did ask at the 18 month appointment and he recommended that we stick with whole milk until 24 months.

  • No. DD1 had whole milk from 12 months to 2yo, when we switched to 1% (which DH and I drink) after the okay from our pedi. DD2 started whole milk at 12 months and will stay on it until at least 2yo, maybe longer as she's very low on the charts for weight a

  • We switched to 2% because DD flat out refused whole unless it was in a bottle, and I'm obviously not going to bottle feed her until 2 years old. :-) we called our pedi and she was fine with it. DD gets full fat dairy in other products that we feed her, so

  • I guess the newer recommendation is actually to keep them on whole milk until 3.  That's what I was told at DD's 15 month appt.  It's best for brain development is what the nurse told me.

  • the whole family drinks whole milk--we will never switch. the fat in milk aids in the absorption of nutrients so taking the fat out of milk serves no benefit. especially with young children they need that fat for brain development.

  • Our pedi said whole milk and whole milk yogurt until 2 (well we would discuss it then) but DD has been tiny so they want her getting the extra fat still.
  • I would call your pedi and ask. I think it's different for every kid.

My LO is maybe 20lbs and just about 18months. I have lactose issues and don't drink or even like milk and DH loves whole so we'll probably stay with whole.

  • Our pedi wants him on whole milk until 2.  He gets 2% at daycare, and they're fine with that as long as we are giving him whole at home.

  • Call your pedi. The research is all over the place. Our pedi said whole to 18 mos just because 12 to 18 mos is a super highly active period and she needs the fat. He said the stuff about it helping brain development has been disproven in recent studies so

  • With my oldest I switched her to 2% at about 16 months because she refused to drink whole.  She drank 2% a bit better but then started refusing that too, so at about 20 months we switched to 1% and she drinks that fine.  We also drink 1% so that

  • Our doctor said whole until 2 years unless there was a weight imbalance, because of the fat/cholesterol needed for brain development.

You know you don't need three different kinds of milk, right? You can just buy two, the skim for your DH a

  • We did whole until DD1 was 2y per our pedi.  She gets 1% now - it is what I drink.  DD2 gets almond and coconut due to dairy intolerance.
