Parenting after a Loss

XP: Working on latch after correcting tongue tie?

LO is one month old today (on his original due date).  We had his tongue tie corrected yesterday- he was a champ.  I've been using a nipple shield due to the tongue tie and my own flat nipples (but I guess they are "stretchy", so we can work with them).  But due to this, we hadn't really focused much on his latch.  Just that he was transferring milk via the shield. Now I want to get him to have a good latch first with teh shield then moving to no shield, but not sure how to do this?  At four weeks, can he still learn to latch properly?  I'm wrking with a LC and have an appointment Thursday, but am interested to hear others' experiences.

  • I do not have experience with this, however, 2 of my sister's littler girls had this issue and had the correction done.  One was almost 3 months old and the other was 1.5 months when it was corrected.  I know that she just continued to put them

  • DD didn't learn to latch until she was 5m old. We used a nipple shield from 3m-5m, and she had bottles/feeding tube before that. She weaned at 19.5m.

So, not all is lost. Just keep trying.

  • He can totally still learn to latch. In fact, its not uncommon to have to remind them of proper latching periodically when they get a little lazy...at least that's what happened with us. I'd have some discomfort and every.time it was his latch was off.
