NICU Mommies

I am hoping you ladies can help me.  A good friend from work just had her second baby last week.  He has been transferred to Lurie Children's and will be in the NICU for some time to come due to some medical issues.  We would like to do something to help her and her husband but are at a loss.  I called the NICU and asked one of the nurses what they recommend that will help the parents.  Besides gift cards to Starbuck's, LEY restaurants or Gino's East there weren't many other suggestions.

I have offered to go and sit with the baby if they need some fresh air and/or time with their two year old. I have also offered to make meals that are easy to heat, etc. They are both there during the day and then going home to feed their DD dinner and put her to bed.  One of them then goes back to spend time with their DS for a few hours before heading home for the night.

Any other suggestions you all can give me to help make their time in the hospital any more comfortable?  Any/all ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • How sweet of you!  Could you organize friends/family to do basic chores and meal drop offs for the family?  Depending on how long they're in the hospital they may need lawn mowing help, planting flowers, spring cleaning, window washing, etc.

  • I loved having some really great hand lotion, some hard candy/lifesavers to munch on and trashy magazines to read while pumping in the pumping room.  Frozen meals were awesome too, they kept us eating on nights when we would not have otherwise. &n

  • When DS was in the NICU, the best gift people could give was their presence. Having visitors almost took my mind off of what was going on and helped me to not just sit and dwell on things that I couldn't change. Besides that, gas cards were great since al

  • My DS1 was in the NICU so thankfully I didn't have to go home to any other children.  My mom stayed with us and the biggest thing she did was laundry and cooking dinner for us.

  • Bring her fruit! I had a hard time remembering to eat, and when I did eat it was fried (comfort) foods from the cafeteria. Fruit is healthy, quick and easy.

Is the NICU far from their home? Ours was 4 hours away and gas gift cards were a lifesaver. Doing light cleaning at their home would be nice. I didn't eat very much healthy food because it all took too long to make, so bringing them something homemade wou
