Question about gestational screening test

Hey guys!

I have my 1 hour gestational screening test wed morning. I've been trying to find out if I should eat or not... I keep finding conflicting information. I think I'll just call my doc and ask tomorrow, but I was wondering, for those of you that have already taken it... did you eat, and if you did, what did you eat? Would half a bagel with cream cheese be ok?

TIA!

Re: Question about gestational screening test

  • I just had mine today and they didn't say anything about eating or not. It wasn't until 10:30 so I had a bowl of cereal (honey nut cheerios, yummy) with milk and a bottle of water. I chose to not have any fruit or anything extra and was ok for my test. Th

  • I'm going in at 10am the day of my appt. The nurse said don't eat for an hour before drinking. So since I'll sleep until 8am probably, so I'll just hold out and drink my drink at 9am (they gave it to me already) and go in for 10am blood draw.

  • In my first pregnancy, my doctor told me to eat normally before the test. So I did, and I had cereal, OJ, and a banana. The lady who drew my blood told me that was not the right food to eat before the test, but there was nothing I could do at that point

  • You should do whatever the lab instructed you to do. This should not be a question. If they didn't give you instructions then you need to call and ask.

  • The newer glucose tests do not require fasting.  It wasn't that way when I was pg with DD in 2011, so it's fairly new, so that is probably why you are getting conflicting info.  The paperwork my OB gave me with the drink says just no eating a

My doc said nothing but water for the 2 hours prior to the test.

  • I didn't get specific instructions but when I asked, the OB said tea and toast would be a good breakfast so I don't yield a false positive due to ingesting too much sugar beforehand.
  • I wouldn't have any carbs personally. When I had both of mine I had protein rich foods. Eggs and bacon. It filled me up. My doc said breakfast is fine as long as it was protein heavy.
