So...carseats

LO is finally 20lbs. So 'officially' our pedi said we can turn him FF. But didn't the AAP change it to 2 years old?

I think he'd be happier if we turned his carseat, but is a calmer car ride better than a seriously injured baby if, god forbid, something happened?

I don't want to turn his seat just because he may or may not like car rides better. To me it's like giving a poorly sleeping baby reflux medicine 'just because' it may or may not help them sleep better although no other evidence of reflux is present.

DH is stuck on the 'he's 20 pounds now...lets turn him'. I don't know, I'm not necessarily opposed to it.

What did/will you guys do?
Any advice it insight?

  • The new recommendation is 2 years old. I personally don't think that I will keep Audra RF until 2 but I'd like to keep her that way for at least 18 months. She's just barely 18 pounds so we legally can't turn her yet, but she has no problems at this time

  • Addy does struggle some in the car, she is currently still RF. I ride in the back with her a lot of the time to keep her happy. I often wonder if turning her FF would help at all but it doesn't matter right now anyway since she was 16 lbs 3.5 oz at her 1

  • I think it depends on the baby, daisy does just fine rear facing so we will keep her that way as long as possible. We didn't turn our oldest until he was 18 months so I want to try and at least wait until then with her but I know some babies that dot like
  • Abby is still RF at 22lbs.  Ideally, I would keep her RFing as long as her carseat would allow.  However, I don't know if we will make it to 2 years.  I have a small car (Mazda3) and it's already getting hard to get her into the carseat eve

  • We are FF and have been since he turned a year. Cooper screamed when're he was in the car and is so much happier now. I've read the statistics, I've seen the pictures and videos but those are all worst case scenarios. When you barely leave a dirt road, he

  • We turned Aria around last month. We'd had an awful time with car sickness and her screaming so much that it's a danger/major distraction while driving. We tried every suggestion given by the ped, TB ladies, friends, family, the mailman... We seriously tr

  • My DD turned FF at 3y and my son will be at least 3 before I will consider it an option.

I would really encourage you to get out there and do a little research on exactly what happens in a FF collision. The group Car Seats for the Littles on face

  • See if you can find the cash test video of RF and Ff babies.... weight or not, RF is just safer.  Dd isn't in love with being RF, but I plan to keep her that way as long as possible.

  • 20lbs and one year is a minimum, not what's safest. Do some research and you'll find that RF is far safer. My near 3 yo DD is still RF. it's safest to RF to the upper limit of the seat, or by height. My younger DD is much taller and bigger than her older
  • We are keeping Cordelia RFing for awhile longer.  Our pedi said that we can switch her also....but not going to yet.  Might not make it to 2 years old, but hope to.

  • I had to take dd's seat out the other day and then couldn't get it back in rf properly. I have an appt at a carseat check place on 4/4 so she'll ff until then.
That being said she had started fighting being strapped in right around her birthday. Ff

  • I second SunnyDay. I don't plan to FF DS until I have to for height/weight reasons. The only reason I would turn him now is if he had extreme car sickness.

Some info & it also has the video:

  • I plan to leave RF as long as possible. Honestly when we have a 2nd we'll probably turn him forward simply because it'll be too tight a fit once we move his seat our of the center position.

  • Rearfacing children are up to 500 times safer than forward facing. Easy decision for me. Broken necks and death aren't things I mess around with.
