I'm hoping this doesn't get flamed.
DH has worked as a law librarian since he was 18. He started as a clerk and was promoted to the head of reference when he graduated college. He went on to get his degree in library and information sciences. He is second in command at the library. His boss is a total jerk who treats his employees crappy and makes really dumb decisions. H has not received a raise in the past 3 years due to budget issues within the library. The problem is that the library constantly pays for H and other employees to go to conferences across the country that are really not necessary. Or his boss hires interns every summer that stay and work for a few months, get paid, and then leave. Or he hires a bunch of part time people instead of making full time positions so he has to pay multiple people less. The point is, there are ways that the employees could get at least some sort of raise. H feels that because of the situation at the library he needs to take opportunities to find a job that will pay more and/or offer better benefits. We currently pay OOP for health insurance because the benefits at the library suck. It would cost us more to use their benefits than it does to just pay ourselves. There is a real possibility that our premiums will double this coming fiscal year. As it stands, we are fine financially and we will continue to be fine. H just feels that it would be wiser in the long run to find something better.
Which brings me to my point. He applied for a Sheriffs Deputy position. He discussed it with me beforehand and I was not thrilled. My biggest concerns are his safety and a really crappy schedule. He passed the written test and will be taking the agility test in a couple weeks. I'm just really torn. I understand that he wants to be able to provide for us, but I just don't think I'm cut out to be a sheriff deputy's wife. Obviously, I'm not saying I would leave if he took this job, I'm just not sure I would be able to adjust.
This is all still pretty hypothetical but I tend to worry about things before they need to be worried about. So I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or experience with this. Any sheriff deputy's wives or law enforcement wives? Thanks for any input.
Because you're mine, I walk the line....

I'm an officer's wife, and while I love the money the job provides there is plenty about the job that I'm not over the moon about. My father was also in law enforcement all my childhood so I have the somewhat unique perspective of being a child of a co
He's really going to go through all of the effort of trying to get into the sherrif's department just to use it as leverage for his current job? That seems like an awful lot of effort to me, why not apply for something that doesn't require as muc
I grew up in a "Police/Fire/Sheriff/EMS family". There's always the fear in the back of your mind of the worst. However, there are many opportunities within the job for advancement but also to be the person there in another's time of need i
My husband is in federal law enforcement-- he carries a gun 24/7 and is basically on all the time if necessary. IMO to be in law enforcement you really have to want the job so if he's just doing this because he wants to show his boss that he can
