Mason's beautiful birth and my crazy postpartum.......

I know it's been a couple of weeks but I thought I'd share my birth story anyway.

On Monday March 4th I had a MW appointment to have my membrane swept. Well that part was easier than I thought it would be after reading so many times that it was very uncomfortable. It very well might have helped that I was already 2cm dilated. After the MW we went ahead and tried to really get things started by visiting the chiropractor immediately after. All was well and I was very relaxed. Off to lunch we went. In the middle of my delicious panini and black bean soup I had my first contraction (3:25pm). After lunch we headed home and my fiance headed to work. My contractions stayed about 20-30 minutes apart until about 9:30-10pm and quickly went to 10 minutes. I managed to stay home until almost 1:30am until I was afraid that if we didn't head to the birthing home that we'd be having this baby at home. I labored in the tub and shower til about 7am when my body decided it was time to push (really crazy feeling I actually told my midwife "I don't know what that was. I didn't do that!"). Approximately an hour later Mason joined us at 7:58am. That's when everything started going wrong. Almost an hour later I still hadn't delivered my placenta. At some point I blacked out with mason in my arms, and came to with my MW yelling at me to stay in my body and a lot more blood than I remembered in the tub. They decided that dad needed to take the baby even though the poor guy was starting to freak out a bit. After a few really hard pushes I delivered the placenta minus two pieces that decided to stay attached. Even with the retained fragments there was still much more bleeding than there should have been. After a few hours and a few medications we made the decision to transfer to the local hospital. By the time I got to the hospital I had lost 1500cc of blood and was still bleeding. The hospital was already expecting me, and quickly whisked me up to L&D with an OR already waiting. After everything was said and done I had lost half of my blood volume, had the two fragments cleared with a D&C, and three cervical lacerations repaired. I spent three days in the hospital getting four pints of blood, and three rounds of potent antibiotics.

Crazy story with a perfect little boy that doesn't like it when mommy eats cheese and butter.

  • Wow that is scary!!  Are you OK now?  Is anemia a problem?  Glad things worked out OK.  Would you do a homebirth again?

  • That's wild! My placenta actually came out fast and very shortly after giving birth and I had some hemorrhaging but nothing that warranted the hospital so I was lucky. I'm so glad you made it out okay! Loosing that much blood is hard to recover from! <
