Baby Names

Is Jocelyn old fashioned?

I'm laying here in the middle of the night and can't sleep, thinking of baby names. We are team green, but for a girl, Jocelyn keeps popping into my head. DH likes more of the popular names like Ella, Isabelle, and Zoey. I like the more classic like Vivienne, Isla, and Eloise. Is Jocelyn a good compromise? Middle name will be a family name, either Ruth or Emma.

ETA: I usually don't like 'y' in a name, but for Jocelyn it seems to be the correct spelling. Jocelin or Joceline don't seem right.

  • I love the name, and I think it's a great compromise.  It's a legit, classy name, but it's not overly popular. And, yes, the way you've spelled it with a 'y' is correct.
  • I think it's a beautiful name! I really like it with the MN Ruth

  • I love this name, and it is the perfect compromise... I don't consider it old-fashioned or newly or overly popular. It's right in between!

With the "y" is correct.  Those other spellings look odd to me.

  • Not old fashioned.

DH and I briefly considered it when we found out we were having a girl.  We were looking at feminine "Jo" names.

    Nice choice!

  • I do think it's old fashioned, but I like it. I also like all of your other choices. I'm actually not so big on your DH's choices.

  • No, I do not consider Jocelyn old fashioned. It's a perfectly nice name, and a good compromise for someone who wants something with a long history that feels more modern. It's an old name, but it fits modern patterns.

    The -lyn ending makes it

  • No, I really like the name Jocelyn.

  • It does fit in with the "old name" trend but it is a lovely name.

I would not spell it any other way than Jocelyn...any other way looks misspelled.

  • I like it. It was almost my mom's name! But I also knew a few people both my age and who are small children named Jocelyn. It's a name that's never been super popular, but I don't associate it with a certain time period, either.

I know a little girl named Jocelyn only spelled uneekly and it fits her perfectly. They call her Linny for a NN.

And yes, Jocelyn is the proper spelling of the name in my experience. I'm not a fan of the nn Jocie though.
