Anyone tried placenta encapsulation?

Really not sure where to put this post? Here, or natural births or PPD?

Read up on a bit and it peaked an interest. Really on the fence about consuming my own placenta, but I am a FTM from a family that has a long history of depression (and i really dont want to fight depression, again, especially with LO in my life). My mom suffered from PPD with her third and it snowballed into deep depression for 4 or 5 years, if not longer.. I've read that the placenta fights PPD, give you energy and helps milk suppy. Also it gives the mother a boost of nutrients and supplies baby with a familiar-nutrient rich milk.

While I don't think i could stomach actually eating it, i think to encapsulate it in a mixture of herbs seems pretty doable

Has anyone tried this for themselves? I'd especially like to hear from mothers who didn't with one child but did with another..Really just wanna educate myself as much as possible.

(This is a serious question, so if you just wanna make an "ew" comment, I'd appreciate if you'd keep it to yourself. When I first heard about this a few years ago my reaction was "ew, yucky!" but i would have also said the same thing about childbirth and changing diapers.)

TIA! :)

  • You'll get a better response (quantity-wise) over on the Natural Birth board.

  • I was not able to get mine encapsulated, but a few girls on my BMB did and they seem to think it made a difference.  Also, read this:

Warning:  There are pictures...they ARE kinda gross, but the story is cool.

  • I also had my curiousity sparked by this, but I think I'm leaning towards not. Because from what Ive read the placenta filters out bad things so they don't go to the baby... Why would I want to ingest a high concentration of things my body has already deemed unfit for my baby?

Just another perspective, I don't know if you've read that as well.

FYI I don't think it's gross, I just need more info on what is in it. And I'm proud of you looking for ways to prevent ppd and depression in general.

I think i read that too.. than any toxins that baby excretes (urea and whatever else) is soaked up by the placenta and put in your blood.. i thought that its then filtered through our blood into our own waste products.. I can't say how many times i've eaten liver and onions in my life, and at least placenta is more nutrients than toxins- unlike liver lol. I'm not sure what i'll do yet.. Thank you all for your responses, i think i'll repost over in natural births.

  • I would not encapsulate it myself but I did have it done. Most of the doulas in our area do it for a small fee.

I will be doing it again when we have a second baby. Since I'm a ftm I don't have anything to compare it to but it was worth it.

  • I'm trying to decide whether or not to have my doula do this for me. I'm due 3/30 so I kind of need to make a decision. I didn't w my twins, not that I could bc I think the hospital saves twin placentas for study. I didn't experience ppd after my twins and was able to ebf them for 12 months. I'm considering it for this babe bc we are moving out of state 2 mos after the baby's birth and I have a pair of 3yr olds to contend w and think the placenta encapsulation w help me deal/cope better than I would have otherwise. I'm going to check out the other board to see if there are any discussions there. Good luck.
