New and Q about Veggie Gardens

Hi!

I dont post here, but I have been lurking for a while. My family is starting to make some big changes in regards to how we eat and we are moving towards eating sustainably and keeping far away from factory farmed foods.

I would like to start a small container on our deck as our yard will not be ready to prepare a proper garden until next year. I was wondering if anyone else is growing organic veggies in containers and if so, what type of containers do you recommend for shallow rooted veggies? I am reusing some large clay pots we have for beets carrots etc.

TIA and I really love reading this board!

  • When I lived in an apartment, I used to use a window box planter for my herbs.  It was nice because you can put a few plants in it, and have them all right in one place.  And my tomato plants have always just been in large plastic pots.

  • Also a fun tip:

Take a picture the day you plant...then take a picture as your harvest comes to fruition.  It's amazing to see what you can do with your hands, you know?

  • Any container that hasn't been treated with chemicals and can drain well can be suitable for gardening... tote bins, buckets, old kegs, wooden boxes... even old dresser drawers.
Be as creative as you want to be!
