Whooping Cough Vaccine

Yay or Nay while pregnant?  Just looking for some peoples thoughts....

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine

  • My GP told me to ask my OB about it around 24 weeks since if you get it at that time the immunity will pass to baby.  I bet my OB will be all about it since they were so gung ho about the flu vaccine (which I did not end up getting).

  • Yes, but around 28 weeks according to doc.  When I had DD two years ago, the protocol was to wait until after delivery. Most received the vaccine in the hospital after delivery. Fathers should also get the vaccine as should any other close caretaker.

I had 2 confirmed cases in my classroom and was

  • Yay. You can get it while pregnant or immediately after birth. The benefit to getting it while pg is that your baby gets some passive immunity to help them more after birth until they can get their own vax.

  • I had it done at 14 weeks.  My doc just wanted me out of first tri.  Though if I had read more about the timing, I probably would have waited until now.   My husband got the shot also and our parents likely will as well.

  • Most definitely YAY!

If your hospital/OB office will not give you the vaccination until after delivery, ask for it. Our hospital does this per protocol, but not all do.

The CDC recommends you get it between 27 and 36 weeks.

  • My OB gave it to me at the hospital.  I would definitely recommend it - pertussis can be fatal to a newborn.  I made DH go get it as well.
