TV at Daycare?

Does your DCP have your LO watch tv? Do you know how much? I usually do drop offs and DH picks baby up. The few times I picked DS up, I noticed they had the tv on for the older kids. I asked DH and he said they always have tv on when he gets there. I get that the older kids may want to watch their cartoons but DS's PNP is in the same room facing the tv so he watches it too. It's an in home daycare with one playroom with kids ranging from 8 months to 5yo, so the babies aren't separated as they can be in daycare centers.

WWYD? Would you ask the DCP how much time the kids watch tv a day? Im ok with DS watching a little tv but not hours of it.

ETA: I should add that I knew about this daycare by word of mouth by a trusted coworker who also has her kids there. For obvious reasons I wanted DS in a place that was already "tried and tested". The DCP loves and cares for the kids but not sure if Im ok with frequent tv watching.

Re: TV at Daycare?

  • I would personally find a new daycare. I think that's unacceptable plus who knows how long it is on and what they watch throughout the day.

  • You are not paying the daycare provider to have the tv on all day to entertain the children. I also have the tv on at home occasionally but that's not what I would expect a daycare to do.
  • No way. I've always made that a stipulation of any daycare provider, whether it be a nanny, in-home dc, or a center. I'm not paying that kind of money for them to have the tv babysit my kids. Granted, it's a lot more about my toddler than it is about DS2

  • In NC there are laws about not having TVs on more than 30 minutes a day at daycares.

Why should you pay someone to let your kid watch tv? If you're paying them they should be watching them not letting the TV do it.

  • I would just talk to the woman and acknowledged you understand older kids watching TV, but maybe during those times LO could have PNP in kitchen or another room. My LO loves just being in a new room from time to time, she always comes into the k

  • Not ok in any way shape or form. I wouldn't be paying for my kid to sit in front of a television. Any center that I have worked at has not allowed this. They watch movies a few times a year for special occasions like pj days or something like that

  • I would ask them about it. Maybe it's just at the end of the day. Are they having snack or something when they're getting picked up? I definitely wouldn't be ok with it on all day but if its a little bit like 30 mins to an hour tops especially for the old

  • We're not tv people  - and I kind of feel (for my toddler) that things like tv and cookies should be treats she has with us, not every day at the dcp. The idea of a baby in a pnp watching tv is not okay to me, so I would say something. Especially sin

DS is in a center and they do not have TVs there. We have the TV on at home a lot but DS never really pays attention because he's too busy with other things. But I'm sure that will change as he gets older. It would bother me to be paying someone to wat

  • I'd be pretty annoyed about that because I'm on the more extreme end of no screen time, not unrealistically so but it's not something I would say is necessary for a daycare.

That said, I worked for a home daycare that was pretty darn

  • Our in home provider has it on sometimes, often during drop-off so the couple of older kids are briefly entertained and she can talk to the parents dropping off about when the infants last ate, etc.  I trust her to not have DD in front of the tv freq
