Info about Towns

I am looking at a possible relocation to the San Diego area, and am trying to gather some information before my husband and I make a decision.

We have a 10 month old daughter, and are looking for a town with excellent schools. We would like to live in a neighborhood with other families where we can for walks in a town with lots to do for kids. We would like to settle somewhere and love it instead of renting for a year and then wanting to move again. Local restaurants and a grocery store with organic produce are a huge plus as well.

Here is what I have come up with so far -- input is appreciated! My husband would be at USMC Miramar.

Carmel Valley & La Jolla look good. Schools rate 9, and it looks like a 20-25 minute commute (not sure about traffic?).

Del Mar & Rancho Santa Fe have excellent schools rating a 10, but might end up out of our price range to live.

Carlsbad & Encintas are rating an 8 overall on Great Schools, but have great word of mouth reputations. Not much else is really standing out for me on these two. The rent seems just as high as the 4 towns listed above? Are they worth looking at?

Poway is also an 8 ... is it more of a country town? It is farther out and hard for me to determine its personality. What is it like to live there?

San Marcos seems like a great budget choice -- the most affordable rents and also an 8 on schools. Is it more city or country? It seems like we can get a lot more space for our money out here, but I don't want to end up out there and then wish I was closer.

Are any of these towns more of a retirement community or young person? We would like to be somewhere with lots of families.

Do any of these places have a cute downtown that is fun to walk around in?

What can we expect for rent? Any property managment / real estate websites you can pass along? We'd love a 3+ BR house to rent on a 1 or 2 year lease. From what I gather it would cost $2700 - $3000.

Any great spots to stop and eat / play when we visit in any of these places?

  • Good questions! I am mobile bumping so please excuse any strange punctuation. Poway is definitely a bit country, although a super family town. It, and anything off the 15, has quite a bit of traffic... I happen to love Encinitas but may be because I lived

  • Well are you looking for beach or slightly inland? San Marcos is not majority country though it has its spots. I would say to get the things on your list and an affordable budget option check out vista/shadowridge area. Great schools, lots of neighborhood

  • Yay for moving to SD! Aside fr 5yrs in my mid20s that i lived in Hawaii, I was born raised here. I grew up in Encinitas La Costa and both are great familyfriendly towns w/short drives to the beach, also fwyclose for commuting. I've also lived in Leucadi

  • I moved to Scripps ranch 2 years ago.... I love it here. It is starting to become a neighborhood with young families but still in transition in my area. Can't get much closer to miramar. Poway is the best school district hands down... I'm a teacher so w
  • Coastal Carlsbad, Encinitas, or Leucadia are where you want to be. Poway is nice but more rural with pockets of traffic from the freeway. Rancho santa fe is gorgeous but some of the most expensive acreage in the country, not worth it when it is right on t

  • We live in Rancho Penasquitos (Park Village area). It belongs to Poway School District. The schools are great. Especially Park Village Elementary, truly feels like extended family.
