Oatmeal

When did you guys stop using infant cereal (we've been doing infant oatmeal since DS was 5 mos old)?  DS has always loved it - first mixed with formula and now mixed with puree fruit.  At some point do they "graduate" to regular (e.g., Quaker) oatmeal? We're on the cusp of stopping purees - he still eats them along with finger/table food but I could probably stop them at any time and he would not miss them, with the exception of maybe at breakfast - so, I'm trying to think of a substitute for the infant oatmeal/pureed fruit combo.  Does anyone do the low sugar instant oatmeal packs?  Any other suggestions? TIA!

  • I prepare regular oatmeal and then add in a container or 2 of the pureed fruit.  I buy the big canister of quaker oats and prepare as directed on the container with whole milk and then add in the fruit.  To make my life even easier, I prepare th

  • Yea we use quick oat, I make with half water and half apple juice. I used to use the lower sugar instant oatmeal ones for myself, but I realized this isn't too much harder, and it tastes delicious!

  • I usually use Quaker Oats with butter and cinnamon.  However, when I am in a hurry, I give the kids Rachel Ray oatmeal packets.  They are a healthier option, and super yummy.

  • Nina likes a baked oatmeal I make with bananas and blueberries. I make a big pan and it lasts quite a few days. It's a quick and easy breakfast to have around especially when I am working and someone is watching her.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like making the regular oats and mixing things in is easier than I thought it might be, and it's good to know it will last a few days (that helps in the time department!). We'll be giving that a try!

  • We've been doing plain Quaker oatmeal since DD was about 10 months old or so.  I buy the plain in the canisters and then add various combinations of applesauce, vanilla yogurt, mashed fruit, and diced fruit to change up the flavor.

  • DD only liked it in the very very beginning of offering solids. Now she loves the regular oatmeal with a little half n' half mixed in. I steam some raisins or apricots and she likes that too!
