Pumping Up Pumping

Ok, so I no longer abhor my breast pump. Going back to work in two days kinda forced me to buckle down and figure the darned thing out. Now I find myself scrambling to pump up a decent stash for DH to feed DS when I'm at work.

I am trying to up my supply so that I can feed DS and have some extra. I know it's supply and demand so every two hours...if I'm not feeding, I'm pumping. But I'm finding it hard to get any decent amount of milk if DS has already fed. For example, if DS feeds and then I pump two hours later I'm lucky to get 1/4 oz total from both sides, whereas if we go out of the house and DS has formula or if DS takes a long nap and doesn't eat for several hours I can very easily get 1-3 ozs. I guess that makes sense and if I keep pumping or feeding every couple hours I imagine I'll start getting more and more.

I guess what I'm asking for is any tips from you mamas that are more experienced with pumping.

Re: Pumping Up Pumping

  • Try doing an extra pump session in the morning after lo eats. I find I have a lot of milk in the morning and less by the afternoon. Adding just one pump session should be enough to build up your stash. And try not to stress, stare at the clock or obsess a

  • Thank you! I'll add in an extra morning pump! I know that relaxing and not thinking about it really helps. My best pump (3 ozs) was after a shopping trip where DS had formula but I was also watching DH play with DS (so sweet!). I actually asked DH if I co
  • Does your LO always eat from both sides? If not you can pump from one side while he feeds from the other. It sounds tricky, but it's pretty easy after some practice. Georgia sleeps long stretches, so I pump one side in the morning when I have a ton of mil

  • I pump 1 bottle in morning and get about 6 oz. At night dh gives lo 4 of that and I pump during that feed time. I find this helps me get a little extra.

  • Ironically my morning tends to be low cuz LO eats so much when she wakes up! I had the same issue tho and now I get about 2.5 oz per session. This worked for me:
