Really judged another parent today

I went to DD's school for a parent info thing - it was me and some other moms.  About 10 min. into the meeting, one parent gets up and says, "I'll be right back.  I need to check on my kid."  She had left her 2 year old asleep in her car.  In a public parking lot.  Which we could not see from our meeting room.  And it was 2 closed doors to get out of the building to the parking lot, so I doubt we could hear the kid if she cried.  So, she comes back, and we're all just looking at her, so maybe she felt compelled to explain, so she says, "Oh, she's fine, still asleep, the windows are open, so it's ok."  So, then I couldn't focus on the meeting anymore, because I kept thinking about the little girl asleep in the car.  The mom got up to check on her a couple more times, and the last time, I guess she woke up because the mom brought her back to the meeting where she sat quietly on her mom's lap for the last 10 min.  Maybe I am super paranoid mom, but I can't imagine leaving DD asleep in the car in a public parking lot - especially if I was somewhere where I couldn't see/hear her.  I was trying to think, OK, maybe there's something I don't know about her kid - she didn't sleep well last night, is sick, etc.......but then I'm also thinking, it doesn't matter - I still don't think I could do that with DD.

No one said anything about it? that's illegal in my state. it doesn't matter if it was in a parking lot. you can't leave dogs, either.

  • Yikes.  Not only is that really bad judgement, it's illegal most places, too.  I don't judge much anymore, but I really judge that.

I kind of judge the group since no one said anything about it. how would anyone have felt if there were a random incident and something happened to the kid?

  • Wow - that is so messed up. I cannot even understand how people can do stuff like that!

  • I understand not wanting to be the one to say anything and start any kind of confrontation, but that's a sticky situation!  It's illegal here in our state so is it wrong that I would have excused myself to "go to the bathroom" and actually called the

i get not wanting to be the outcast who speaks up and points out another person's mistake, but what if something were to have happened? would people just think to themselves that the mom should have known better? because she didn't, and no one</ST
  • Yeah, definitely would have been calling the authorities.

  • It's not very fair to judge her so strongly if you didn't stand up for the child and do something about it. She probably thought she was doing the right thing, windows sracked, car locked, kiddo getting some much needed sleep. She probably didn't know

  • Wow, that is SO bad. Even on a day with mild temperature, the windows cracked and parked in the shade a child can still overheat and die in a very short period of time. I'm so not ok with it and would definitely speak up on behalf of the child. I'm ok

  • Wow, not only is it illegal but our school has a clear and specific policy letting every parent know that if they so much as leave a sibling in the car while picking up another child they will be forced to call the police- no special circumstances permitt

  • I think I might have said "Oh I wouldn't want you to get arrested so my husband will go sit on the curb next to your car till you are ready to come get her." *** move? Yes but I would rather that than have something happen to a child. Maybe she didn't kn

  • Off topic a bit, but consider that a group of parents of similiarly aged kids were unwilling to say anything to a parent about leaving a child alone in a car (seriously illegal in most places) and then compare that to the outrage that so many have post

  • I don't judge much any more but this is definitely judge-worthy.  I have to say I also judge the people who did not stand up more for this kid.  I know it's hard, but it needed to be done.

  • WOW!!! I would totally have said something to that Mother!! Not only is it dangerous but its ILLEGAL!!
  • Ehhh, I would probably discreetly called the police too just because she probably wouldn't have listened to me or blown me off.   However, if police were called on her, she would probably not do it again.
