poor speech ?

I don't know if I should be worried....

LO is 27 months old and her speech is horrible.  She knows tons of words...just has a hard time pronouncing them.

Is that normal???  I hear other 2 year olds talking fantastic.  Like for Maci..she says Gigi   But she can say momma.    It's weird.  Any advice....i repeat what she is saying and i enunciate it over and over...but she repeats it also..but her own way.  Spoon sounds nothing like spoon.  I can understand everything she is saying...but no one else can.

Thanks....my mom's on my case about how she should be talking so much better etc..:(

  • Our little guy is the same way.  We had him tested through Early Intervention and he qualified for speech therapy.  It's a free program through every state, but only until they turn 3.  So, if you want her evaluated for free do it soon.<

  • I wouldn't worry yet. Her vocab is probably exploding so fast she can't keep up with pronunciation. It takes time for the tongue and mouth to strengthen for certain sounds as well. I could only understand half of what DD said a 2, and had to translate

  • My daughter is the same way. I only understand a handful of words that she's saying. I had her evaluated and she didn't qualify for services and was told that she was normal. Frustrating though.

  • No advice but I feel so much better reading this. DD is in the same boat. she's 25 month old and has tons of words but I have to translate 70 to other people. I keep telling my hubby I want to get her tested but he thinks she's just fine. Pedi wasn't conc
  • You can still have her evaluated. My pediatrician didn't bring it up, I initiated it.

  • i would definitely get her evaluated by early intervention. not to be an alarmist, but there are a few disorders that cause difficulties with articulation like apraxia and phonological processing disorder that aren't just going to go away with time and

  • I will say that my daughter got obsessed with Super Why recently and it's helped her speech tremendously. It may not help every kid, but at least it's more fun to watch than some of the other garbage on tv.
