WWYD PCSing at 8 months pregnant

We will be PCSing from JBER, AK back to the lower 48 possibly JBLM, WA when I'm about 32 weeks along. The plan was to do a combination of driving and taking the ferry. That was before I found out I was pregnant again. We also have a 10 month old daughter. Some of the areas we would be driving through are very remote and have no hospitals that I'm aware of. Would it be stupid of me to go ahead with our plans as is, or should I just fly with my DD and DH can do the drive with our pups and we can meet up somewhere closer to our destination that's a little more populated?

  • I would not risk driving, especially for that long without a hospital in range. Besides the medical risk, you're bound to be uncomfortable in a car for that long! I'd fly, but that's just me. If you do decide to fly, check the airlines policy on flying while pregnant. Some will not let you fly past a certain week of pregnancy.

  • I wouldn't get too worried about hospital access at 32 weeks. You will probably be uncomfortable on the drive though, so consider that in your planning. Most airlines' policies are not to take passengers aboard after 35 weeks, but it's against federal law for them to ask you if you're pregnant or how far along you are, so it's kind of an honor system and revolves around what you and your doctor are comfortable with.

Personally, I would probably drive with MH, but flying is an equally valid choice it just depends what you're comfortable with.

  • As someone who PCSed at 36 weeks, while supposed to be on moderate bed rest, I'd say go for it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • I'm in the exact same boat! Pcsing from hawaii to probably texas at 31-33 weeks. Luckily I'll be in florida visiting family and will be driving from there so it isn't too terribly far but I'm still not sure about how good of an idea it is.

  • Not sure what branch of the military you or your hubby are in, but I know that in the Army, the service member can request for a change of orders with an adjusted date based on your due date, etc. It is something that would be worked out first at the incoming unit level, then coordinated with the unit that the service member is leaving, but it is allowed and it does happen fairly often. Not sure if that is something that would be an option that you would be willing to pursue, but it never hurts to ask!
