Giving in?

This had been a particularly trying week for us. B is teething and refuses to eat anything and purposefully throws it on the walls and floor! I have been trying everything, the last couple of days I have just been taking him out of his high chair, but then he isn't eating. Him not eating bothers me, but he refuses to eat anything while sitting in his chair.
After I take him out he stands at the gate at the kitchen pointing to the cabinet that his crackers are in and starts crying. I don't want to give in and give him the crackers or fruit cups every time because I don't want to reinforce the behavior, but I don't want him to not eat! I am torn, should I give in? Ugh... So frustrating!

  • As soon as I can see that it is not happening with food for h, I will give him his food cup or what not before he can cry for it while he is in his chair. That way, he doesn't win and I know he ate something.

I know, not ideal, but I am desp

  • I know you don't want to reinforce the behavior but giving in sometimes is OK. I agree with Nita that its better to catch them before its a total tantrum so its something you're offering not them demanding. Them knowing that they have some kind of control

  • Do you have the highchair pulled up to the table? Lo sometimes likes to sit in the big chairs at the table and won't eat if I "boooooooculllllllll" her in with her tray.
  • I have been battling this with A for a while.  When she would proclaim "ALL DONNEEEE" or start throwing her food (after eating nothing)  I would remove her from her chair and put her food in a bowl and set it in her kitchen or on her small ta

  • The part of your text that I am picking up on the most is that he is teething. When DS is teething he doesn't eat very well at all. He will eat things like applesauce so I will offer him his food and if he doesn't eat then I will give him the applesauc

  • We have the same problem here. P seems to want to eat, but not in her highchair. If she got her way, she'd have a handful of food in both hands and just nibble every now and again while she plays. Just last night I was asking MH if thinks we should take t

  • We had this problem with DD for awhile. I thought it was teething at the time but now think it was unrelated. Putting her in a booster at the table made a huge difference!
