Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Clothing Sizes

I'm just wondering where other babies are at in clothing size.  My son is 8 months old tomorrow and is wearing 9 month clothes.  He was six weeks early and I find I've transitioned to 3-6 and 6-9 month clothes roughly on schedule.

Also, for those of you with bigger babies or STM can you talk to me about the jump from 12 to 18 month clothes?  I like to always buy a size or two ahead when I see sales/clearance etc but I've been told by a few people now that their LOs were in 12 month clothes for quite a bit longer that the infant sizes.

I'd like to start buying summer clothes but I live in WA so "summer" doesn't show up until July and usually runs through September.  LO will be 1 on June 29th.  Should I be buying his shorts in 18 months or are they going to fall off?  He's 17 or 18 lbs right now and I'm guessing 27 inches?  At his appt last month he was 16 lbs and 26 inches and I KNOW he's grown!  When I look at 18month clothes they look so big to me but I remember his nine month stuff looked completely enormous just a few months ago and now it fits fine!

It's wonderful to see how fast and healthy he's growing after being a preemie but part of me can't believe how soon my baby will be a toddler!

Re: Clothing Sizes

  • I would also love to know how long STM babies were in 12 month clothes. My DD is 9 months and in 9 month clothes. She's right on schedule too.

  • My LO is 7 and half months.  I find she fits well into the 9-12 month size usually.  I even have a few 12-18 month things that fit her nicely too.  She hasn't been weighed in a little while - but I think she is in the 19-20 pound range right now.

  • My LO is behind, at 7 months she still wears 3-6month clothes, though tshirts and such she'll fit into 6-9month. Those bigger onesies still swallow her though.

  • It really is going to depend on your child.  My kids both grew rapidly the first 9 months and then slowed down. I live in Florida though, so there are pretty much only two seasons (hot and hotter) so buying ahead for us works since it is almost ALWAYS shorts and tee weather!  If I had to buy for specific seasons, I probably would not buy ahead yet.

  • Good question, I'm curious about this too. My son is 9 months next week and wears 9-month clothes and jammies.  BUT, those aren't going to last long as the pants are getting short (waist is still fine).  He has a couple of 12-mo pants that fit well lengthwise but I am going to ride out his 9-mo pants as long as I can:) At his last appt 2 wks ago (sick) he was 21 lbs and 30 inches long.

  • DD is 7 months old as of yesterday and I have her in 18 month stuff... even some 24 month items. She is really, really tall so the pants are usually a little loose but plenty long. She also has a long torso so onesies have to be really long and tops do to.

It's funny that I used to think 18m stuff looked so big but now it's already looking really small...

  • Well as everybody says every baby is different and I am still getting used to my DS and his clothing sizes! With my DD she was in the size clothes for how old she was - 6 months old just went into 6 months clothes, etc. Now with DS he is almost 9 months old and is in 18 month clothing and sometimes he is in 24 month sleepers. He is a big eater, and is about 24 lbs. He was not in 12 months for too long and I feel by the end of spring or early summer he will be in 24 month onesies and such - yikes!

  • My LO is 9 months today and is still wearing some 3-6, but mostly 6 month stuff. He's 10th percentile.

  • LO is 7months exactly and is wearing 9month sleepers but everything else 3-6 months. She is just now almost 14lb and is not close to outgrowing 3-6 stuff.

With DS, he wore, and still wears, the sizes exactly as shown on the tags. He is very average in size.

I guess it just really depends.

  • DD is 8 months in 8 days and 6-9mo clothes are getting small, but 9+ mo clothes are pretty baggy still. Carter's brand is always big on her for quite some time and walmart cheapies tend to run smaller. It's all about the brand.

I recently hit up a sale and some of the 12 month clothes said 18-25 lbs and DD is 17 lbs so we picked up some "summer" clothes. We're in OR so I know what you mean about summer not really showing up until July.

  • My ds is almost 8 months and wears 12 month pants. 18 months size seems huge but he is growing like a weed! I bought spring and summer cloths too early and I dont think he'll fit into them when the time comes. They grow too fast! He wore 9 months clothing not even a whole month!
