This isn't necessarily SN related, but when I do post to TB, this is where I post. I feel most comfortable on this board, and really don't know where would be a better place to post, so here goes...
My youngest son's growth has slowed way down, so we have been keeping a close eye on things. From birth until 9 months, he steadily gained weight and length and sat in the 5-10% range for weight and 40-50% range for height.
Between his 9 month well check and his 12 month well check he only gained 11 ounces. That moved him down on the growth chart to under the 1% mark for weight, so we started tracking his weight and adding 1 can of pediasure to his diet.
In the past 6 weeks, despite adding pediasure to his diet, he hasn't gained any weight or any length. His weight in now at like .2% and his length has moved down to the 21%. We decided on Monday to do some lab work. The ped ordered a CBC, a Urine Analysis, a metabolic panel and some liver function tests.
All his results came back from his blood work that we had done and I
heard back from the doctor. Here are the results that were out of range:
On his CBC: MCV and MCH are low, RDW is high.
On his UA: ketones in urine (40), UROB level is borderline low.
On his basic metabolic panel: CO2 is low, glucose is low (61), calcium level is high, ANION gap is high.
I
finally just heard back from the doctor (well technically she is a
Pediatric CNP). She said she talked through everything with another
pediatrician in the practice this morning he wasn't concerned about any
of the "off" results. When she told me, I said, "really?" Her response
was, "I know, I thought the same thing." She initially didn't order
celiac blood work since he doesn't seem to have bowel issues that would
be a normal symptom of that, but now we are going to complete that blood
work too.
As much as I don't want anything to be wrong,
honestly, I don't feel comfortable with this. I am no doctor, but to me,
there are just so many things that were off in those results. Coupled
with the fact that he isn't growing, I don't know, I'm just not
comfortable.
She still wants us to go to a nutritionist, so I
think I am going to use them as a second opinion. I would just not be
able to forgive myself if all of a sudden something goes really wrong
and these were our clues. The kid eats literally like ever 90 minutes
while he is awake, but he isn't growing, he has low blood glucose, high
blood calcium and ketones in his urine. That just can't be right...
I
feel like they think we just aren't feeding him enough and we will go
to the nutritionist, who will confirm that. It just isn't true. I have a
kid that has gone through severe eating issues, I know how to provide a
high calorie diet. I am not malnourishing my kid.
Am I overreacting? WWYD?
Re: Not comfortable with this... WWYD?
Ds1 had a bunch of metabolic panels ran that came back abnormal. However, they didn't mean much.
unfirtunately, with kids they're bodies are so rapidly changing that there really isn't a set limit of normal levels. They're usually arb
Hi there. First of all, I'm sorry you're going through this and can understand why you're so worried. Thoughts and prayers to you and your little one.
Second, I thought I'd share my similar experience with my youngest (now 2 yrs).&n
This is the 1 year old?
DD2 dropped off the growth chart for weight about a 2 year ago (she just turned 2). I think her height is in the 10-20th % now. Her weight is still <0 percentile. We went to GI and we have done bloodwork he
