How necessary is a video monitor?

We just received a Graco sound monitor at our shower. It is around 60 dollars and the video monitor I was looking at is about 120. Is it worth it to return the one we got and pay the extra for the video? I'm a ftm and think the video monitors are cool but I'm really not sure how necessary they are.

They aren't necessary at all, more of a piece of mind thing imo. We got by fine with cheap sound monitors for the first two. (That said, I reeeeeally want a video monitor so I don't have to sneak in and out just to see if the baby is awake or

I'd day it depends.. We are on the opposite side of the house on a different floor. Being able to peek if dd is up or talking in her sleep and not go upstairs in the middle of the night is priceless. If dd were in a room next to us less useful.

DD has slept in her room since day 3 and is a very noisy sleeper. With the video monitor, I was able to see that she was still sleeping and there was no need to go into her room and possibly wake her. Totally worth the extra money.
