How did BF moms introduce a bottle?

My LO is 4 weeks old and we'd like to introduce a bottle of pumped breastmilk in preparation for when I return to work at 12 weeks. I pump anywhere from 2 to 4 oz after my morning feeding and am also looking to build up a freezer stash if possible. Kellymom didn't get at the practical details so I'm coming to you wise mamas.

How did you introduce your first bottle? Did DH offer it? How many ounces did you start with? Do you give a bottle every day?

In theory, I'd love DH to take one evening or night feeding so he can enjoy some daddy time and I can get some more sleep! However, I'm worried that skipping a feeding would jeopardize my supply (not to mention be really uncomfortable).

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

  • I gave DS his first bottle at 2 weeks.  I am the one who gave it to him. It was 3 oz, he drank the entire thing.  I  only give him bottles when we are out.

  • DH has been feeding LO 1.5 oz every other evening, so not a full feeding. I do try to pump for a little bit sometime during the day to make up for it. I usually have to nurse DS shortly after the bottle to finish the feeding, which I don't mind.
  • We just stuffed it in his mouth and watched him have at 'er! :D

  • We introduced at 3 weeks. Dh gave it to him. Some days he takes the bottle ok, other times he insists on boob. He's 6 weeks now. We don't do a bottle every day, maybe twice a week or so. I anticipate some resistance when I go back to work though.

  • We had to supplement a little at first due to poor weight gain due to jaundice.  Our LO didn't like our bottles.  :(  So, we had to go buy a different kind before he would take it.  I gave it to him, DH gave it to him, the pedi gave

    Yep, pretty much this! &nbs

  • We started bottles at 4 weeks. Usually I give one or two bottles a week. But we have had lots of visitors so I let them give bottles, my sisters will only get to visit one or two times per year so this is special for them. Anyway as for how it 'works'. I
  • We tried a bottle for the first time when DD was a little over 3 weeks. It was a disaster. She screamed, gagged, choked, etc. My LC suggested that DH try it again with me out of the house, because if she knows I'm there, she will want to nurse. She did

  • We gave lo his bottle in the morning. I pumped since they say you fullest early mornings. This way DH would feed him and I pumped and went back to sleep.

  • DS2 got his first bottle at 6w. Only DH has given him bottles at this point. We do one bottle every other day and it usually the first feeding after DH gets home. I still do all the night feedings. DS2 is 8w and we do anywhere from 3 to 4 oz right now. Go

  • Thanks for all of your input!

I also wanted to share a resource I found after attending a new moms' group at a local mom's center called Isis--they have a TON of breastfeeding webinars led by a LC archived online as well as a live breastfeeding

  • I'm a one sided feeder and I usually nurse on one side and pump the other in the morning. On weekends now I do all the regular night feedings but in the morning DH takes her downstairs and gives her a bottle while I sleep in. When I wake I pump both sides
  • My ILs gave DD her first bottle at 3 weeks when they babysat her. She took it like a champ. We've been giving her a bottle most nights so that she is use to it.

I pump some extra for my freezer stash in the morning. When she gets a bottle in

  • We started giving her one in the middle of the night so I could get some sleep, too. Hubby just gave it to her and she took it like a champ. I also have to get up when he does to pump - to keep my supply up and also so I don't wake up too uncomfortable
