11 month old sleeping A LOT! Worried...

Hi -

My daughter typically sleeps about 10-11 hrs per night and will then nap for 1.5-2.5 hours per day totally about 12-14 hrs in total.  A few days ago we took her to the doctor because she had a fever (103) and stuffy nose.  She said that my daughter had a mild ear infection and virus so prescribed some medication for her ear and told me to make sure she gets lots of liquids to wash out the virus. So we followed the doctor's orders.  Well, just yesterday (second day on medication) she seemed very lathargic - wasn't very energetic and just wanted to be held and cuddled.  She napped her regular amount and I figured her lack of energy and extra need for cuddles was just associated with her still being a little sick.  Last night she slept 11 hrs (typical) and nursed when she woke up but then immediately acted like she was exhausted!  Like was almost falling asleep in my husband's arms while he packed his lunch for the day.  We managed to get her dressed and fed her a very little bit of yougurt and got her off to the babysitters.  She fell asleep on the way to the sitters and slept from 8:30 am - 11:15 am!!!!  A little unusual but ok.....maybe just getting over her illness and needing a little extra rest.  She again didn't eat much at lunch (but took a full bottle - 6 oz), played a little at the sitters and fell asleep again at 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm when I got to the sitters to pick her up.  Once I got her home, I nursed her and she started dosing off AGAIN!!  At this point I didn't know if I should try to keep her awake or just let her sleep.....well, I held her for a bit and cuddled and before I knew it, she was asleep.  As I type this she is in her crib sleeping.  This is definitely out of character for her.  She likes her sleep but this is a little extreme.  What worries me the most is that in between her naps (when she is usually bouncing off the walls) she is really lathargic.  Is this just her way of fighting off whatever virus she has?  A growth spurt?  Should I call her doctor or give it a couple days?  She doesn't have a fever and is nursing ok (although she isn't eating many solids).

  • If she's eating and drinking ok, and everything's coming out the other end, I would not worry. What happens to you when you're sick? Do you want to sleep all day? Do you feel exhausted, even though you just slept all night? Give it a few days for her to g

  • She is nursing ok (still breastfeeding) but isn't at all interested in solids the last two days.  May have a couple bites of finger food and that's about it.  She has been peeing/pooping just fine.

  • My daughter recently had an ear infection and actedthe exact same way. She usually doesn't like to nap much but when she had her ear infection she slept pretty much constantly. I would keep an eye on her but it sounds normal. Hope she feels better soon!

  • Sounds like you have a sick baby on your hands. If she isn't spiking a high fever and is still taking in an adequate amount of liquids then I wouldn't worry about it. It's her body's way of fighting off illness. I sleep all day when I'm sick too. It so

  • This all sounds like normal sick baby behavior to me. Let her sleep it off. Sleep is when the body regenerates and heals. Keep an eye on the nursing and make sure that is not decreasing.
