Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Tummy time and rolling

DS will be 3 months on the 29th.  We try tummy time everyday, but he HATES it! I mean HATES it! Even if we lay him on our chests so he can see our faces, he still screams and kicks.  We carry him upright instead of cradle him, so he can practice holding his head up that way, but his neck muscles aren't very strong. I'm wondering when your LOs were able to hold their heads up?

When we lay him on his back, he doesn't act like he wants to roll over anytime soon.  When did your LOs roll over? Was tummy time more enjoyable when they were able to roll over on their own?

I'm a FTM, so I may be overreacting, but I'm worried he's behind or that something is developmentally wrong.  HELP!

Re: Tummy time and rolling

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it.  I'm a FTM, but I figure the kiddo will figure out things on his own time.  My LO had full neck control at 2 months, but is only now beginning to show interest in rolling.  He's nowhere close.

  • Neither if my kids really liked tummy time but my first really hated it. He didn't roll til 8 months. He just didn't care to. Didn't crawl til 11 1/2 months but he could cruise. He's just fine now at almost 3!

  • Our DS liked tummy time from the get go. We put lots of toys down with him and play with him. But every baby is different and develops at different paces.

He didn't start rolling until a couple of weeks ago -- around the 5 month mark.

  • DD will tolerate it for 5-10 minutes, but we don't do it often enough because she has reflux and just spits up so much...even hours after she has eaten. It's very frustrating. She is no where near being able to roll. I can't see it happening for a long ti

  • DS hated tummy time at first but eventually got better Bhow he loves it. He started rolling at 16 or 17 weeks. By 12 weeks he had enough head control for the bumbo.

  • Usually rolling from back to tummy doesn't happen until 5 or 6 months or later. Rolling from tummy to back is easier and happens first. Just keep trying tummy time and eventually he will figure out how to drop his shoulder and roll over. Ha!

  • Both DD and DS had strong necks from the start. A lot of kids hate tummy time. I wouldn't worry too much about that or the rolling. Your LO is still pretty young. Once he can roll he will be much better about being on his tummy.

  • E hates it too!! If started putting her chest up on the boppy and that kinda helps. But I just keep her upright all the time in the bumbo or jumperoo or in my arms. She's had great head control since 6 weeks and been her bumbo since 8 weeks. She is no sit

  • My LO lives tummy time for awhile ten she's done. She's had really strong neck muscles from the beginning! But I'm in the same boat with other people where she isn't rolling yet. She is trying but just can't figure it out. I wouldn't worry too much eve

  • No rolling here at 3 months. He doesn't show any interest in doing it anytime soon either. He hates tummy time too. Most of the time we put him on our chest so he will tolerate it enough to stengthen his neck.

  • DS hated tummy time too. I wouldn't worry about it at all. He's 6 months old and just learned how to roll from his back to stomach a few weeks ago. He's pretty proud of himself. He still can't roll stomach to back yet though.
