I've been feeling really stuck in my job lately--very uninspired by the work, frustrated with what it means for our lifestyle, and kind of like life is just passing us by. We love the region and town where we live, but we need more space that we can't afford in this market (would like to plan for #2 soon) and realistically I feel like our careers would be pretty stagnant here. The other big problem is that my immediate family is across the country (husband's family isn't close either), and I've been feeling more and more that being near family is important.
I used to be in teaching and I've also been thinking that I might be happier returning to it despite it being a pay cut. I even found kind of the perfect job right near my family (applied, but process is just starting so it will be a while). I don't see myself getting a teaching job where we are now because of the market, so that's not an option. My husband's field can go pretty much anywhere, and I feel like if I were to get this job, he would have time and opportunity to begin looking and we have family connections that could help that process.
Anyone else take a pay cut to be near family or return to teaching? My current work is still related, so I think in overall career path options it wouldn't be a crazy move to return to the classroom and I'd have some potential for freelance opportunities in summer, etc.
I know I need to just wait and see how things go, but I'd love to hear your thoughts as I mull over all of these major life changes. Thanks so much!
Re: Pay cut to move near family?
That's definitely a consideration, though it's kind of tough to determine exactly. Overall, yes, if we move it would be to a lower COL area, though I think in many ways it could be close--there's a lot of variation around my family. For instance, were w
To me, being near family is everything. If I could make it work I think I'd do it.
Ironically, I just left the classroom because I felt like it was eating up all of my time with my kids! I've moved into a school counselor position. Slight p
I was in a similar boat a couple years ago and we did move. The short version-- it was worth it to be near family, but even after 2+ years, I really do miss our old area.
Basically I was looking for a new job anyway and an opportunity came u
We are in a similar boat. Both of our families are 1000+ miles away. We are both happy in our careers, especially because DH just started at a new engineering firm, love the city we're in, have great co-workers, a handful of good friends, and we
We did it. My daughter was born in January of 2012, by July our house in a major city was on the market and by August we had move. It all happened very quickly and in a way I think that might have been a good thing. Do I miss where we use to live and o
