Special Needs

Do you use a babysitter?

I'm curious how you found someone that you truly trust (and isn't family)?

I feel like I'm overusing my parents and my only in-law that can babysit seems to be quite busy.  I need to reach out to someone who can be more of a 'mother's helper' or for a quick date night type of thing--but feel overwhelmed.

I know I'm kind of a control freak about my kids.  My oldest has sensory processing issues and speech apraxia so he is VERY hard to understand.  So communication will be a huge issue as he tries to get his needs across.  In addition, DS2 seems to be showing some major sensory issues and has a horrible time falling asleep at night.  I'm trying different things I learned going through it with DS1, but it's not working as well as I wished.

So how did you go about finding someone?  I don't really have any other mom friends who have special needs kids and don't know many people in our neighborhood.

When I do use a sitter it's usually my neighbors.  There are a few ladies with older kids that I have had watch DS for day t

  • Since I am a military spouse and we move fairly frequently I have never really had family close by that can babysit.  I have found my babysitters through sittercity.com and care.com.  Care.com does have a special needs parameter that you can

  • We've had good luck with two girls from our neighborhood (in HS). When DD1 was younger, we'd put her to bed before we left and frankly all they did was make sure the house didn't catch fire while we were gone. Before we had a dx, we just traipsed along

  • DD was in a mainstream daycare for a year and a half. One of her caregivers there had left a few months before we did. She is now our after-program-5-days-a-week sitter.

For weekends or nights out we use another one of her former daycare caregiv
