1st Trimester

Infections and controversial medication

Has anyone experienced a bacterial infection while pregnant?  I found out today that I not only have a bacterial infection but also a bladder infection.  The medication that was prescribed to me though says that it should not be taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy!!  I am only 7 weeks.

Why would my doctor prescribe something that says not to be used during this critical time.

I am very worried about this. Has anyone else had to take Flagyl during the first trimester?  MIne is an oral prescription.

TIA

Re: Infections and controversial medication

  • I was put on an antibiotic (can't remember which one right now-starts with an m) for a bladder infection yesterday and it says I can use it during pregnancy if it is really needed. Who perscribed those meds? Can you call your dr and question them? I personally would avoid taking anything that says specifically not to take in the first tri.

  • If it was macrobid, you can take it up until the last part of pregnancy. It's called nitrofurantoin in generic.
  • This is called Flagyl.  When I googled it, it says it causes an increased risk of miscarriage and fetal defects!!

I am very concerned that my own OB prescribed this to me.

  • Was it your doctor or OB that prescribed it?

  • It was my OB.

I am having a really bad feeling about how much I can trust her right now.  I am actually looking into changing doctors first thing tomorrow morning.

  • Have you called your OB and asked her?  I got presribed Bactrim from the ER for a UTI and when I picked it up from the pharmacy the label said do not take if you are pregnant.  I immediately called my OB and she said it is safe early in pregnancy.  I would call and express your concerns to your OB.

I was  prescribed Flagyl(Metronidazole) about a week ago. My OB said it was okay. I also went on google and checked it out.

Of course, if you're really concerned I would voice the concerns to your OB.

  • most drugs say not to take during pg -even though they are commonly Rx.d

before you go running to a new doc- TALK TO YOUR DOC - not a message board.

Not all infections are created the same- and some will only repond to certain antibiotics.... and a UTI/bladder infection that goes untreated can turn into a kidney infection- which can have VERY bad consequences.... so if this is the only antibiotic that will kill YOUR particular bacteria (which was shown on culture) - then the benefits would outweigh th risks... risks to baby and risk of letting the infection go untreated.

    talk to your doc.

  • I agree with all of the other ladies.  If you're uncomfortable about taking the meds definitely discuss it with your OB prior to taking it.  On Monday, my primary dr presribed an antibiotic and a cough syrup for me to take for an upper respiratory infection and the 1st thing I didn't was call my OB although I told him I was pregnant.  While waiting on a call back  I researched it online like you and found that it's ok to take.  My nurse never called me back but at my OB appt yesterday, and I was able to speak to the dr directly & she assured me that the meds I was prescribed were the safest to take.  Definitely be comfortable with taking the meds and get clarification from your OB before you take them.
  • It is typically recommended that Flagyl not be taken until the 2nd trimester but is generally regarded as safe. Because it is the only medication used for Bacterial Vaginosis it is advised that 1st trimester pregnant woment not take it to prevent anyone from claiming that their child's abnormality was caused by it. Many medications in the past have been taken off the market because it was commonly used by pregnant women and a certain percentage of them had miscarriages, chromosome defects, etc. There is a certain percentage of the population that will have those bad outcomes of pregnancy regardless of what they take. So to prevent Flagyl being take off the market it is advised not to take it.

I would call your doctor and see what they advise.
