Babies: 3 - 6 Months

STTN Help, please, 4 months

My baby boy is 4 months, 1 week.  He will go to sleep (I nurse him to sleep.. I know, bad) but then his first stretch is about 4 hours and then he gets up every 1.5-2.5 hours after that.  It is very frustrating, because I am up with him at midnight, 2 am, 4 am, 530, etc.  CIO question... is he too young? When he gets up at midnight or 2 am he will nurse quite a while or eat about 3 ounces if my DH gives him a bottle.  I just don't know what to do.  I am so tired, I don't know why he won't sleep and he is still hungry at night :(  I am reading Babywise, but I don't think it's that helpful honestly... what did you do with your little one?

Re: STTN Help, please, 4 months

  • I hate to break it to you- but this sounds normal for a 4 month old. Some babies are just not-so-great sleepers :( It really does suck and I'm not trying to minimize your frustration. Unofrtunately, he is too young for CIO, because emotionally at 4 mon

  • I think he's too young to CIO.. Right now he's still crying because he needs you. I also think he's too young to expect him to sttn as well. I know a lot of people who have much older toddlers who still don't sttn. Hopefully he will start sleeping longer

  • Lol. that's actually pretty good for a 4 month old. Babywise is garbage from what I've read. And yes it's too early for CIO.
  • How often is he eating during the day? Are you nursing on one breast or two at each feeding? How long are feedings?

I know if we have a distracted or short nursing session, he doesn't get fatty hindmilk and is hungry sooner.

    Honestly

  • I've heard that Babywise is actually harmful. I'd throw it away if I were you.

  • This site is not very pro CIO, you will find. How many bottles/how many oz per bottle does he get a day? At my son's 4 mo. visit I was shocked when they told me he needed to be down to 4-5 bottles a day (we were still doing 8!). If he isn't getting all

  • What your LO is doing is completely normal. CIO techniques should not be used until LO is older, but Babywise is crap. Chuck it. Feed your LO if he's hungry, and he'll stop waking to eat when he's ready.

From what I have heard, this sounds like your LO is going through the 4 month sleep regression/wakeful period. Un

  • Thank you all for the tips and advice.  I probably should have mentioned that he was a premie and born 6 weeks early and is in the 10th percentile for height/weight so maybe that has soemthing to do with it.  He is 4 months, 1 week and 13 pou

  • Ahhh--ok, I retract my advice! I would still try for longer/bigger feedings but ask your pedi where your LO should be w/ all things considered. Otherwise have you tried swaddling, white noise or pacifiers? All of these were helpful for my LO at that

  • OK, well from what most of you have said, it sounds like I need to get on a better schedule.  Right now he goes to an in-home daycare (best friend) 3 days a week, then my mom's 2 days a week, and with me and my husband on the weekend.  So I a

  • If you look at the November 2012 board we are all going thru this. Look up wonder weeks!! It explains what's going on during this time for baby. My LO is 19 weeks on Friday and has been getting up every 2 hours at night for over 2 weeks. Last night he fin
