Adoption

Question about the tax credit being applied over 3 years

I know that if you don't get the full $11,000 (ish) back on the first year, you can use the credit for an additional 2 years. This is the case with us.

Has anyone done this? I'm wondering if you got your refund faster the second year or if you had to give additional "proof" of your adoption for the first year, did you have to give it all over again the second year?

And for anyone who applied for the credit in general how long did the refund take?

Well answered about how long it took still welcome!

  • We talked to our tax advisor about it (in regards to the future for us) and she said that it takes a while to get it back the first year. She worked with someone on it last year and they had to come back with paperwork a few times, so maybe it took a mont

  • I thought it was non-refundable, but was applied over 5 years, not 3

I would think the length of time to get a refund back will depend on what's going on with the tax code in general. My hunch is that this year is going to take time, since they j

  • We finalized in 2011, and submitted our taxes in April 2012. We had to resubmit paperwork a few different times (our state has the tax credit too). I think we finally got our entire refund by July, maybe? Not too long.
