Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Using bumper in crib

I know that nowadays pediatricians and most others strongly urge parents to not have bumpers, stuffed animals, or thick blankets in a crib with their baby while they are sleeping. I also have heard of many people that use bumpers and have been since their baby was an infant and not having any problem with them.

I understand the reasoning behind not having bumpers in cribs, stuffed animals, or thick blankets but has anyone been just fine with one or all of the above with their kids? Do you think having a bumper in the crib is easier in a way so the baby doesn't bump their heads or get their foot or hands caught as much? Let me know your thoughts.

I'm thinking of trying out our bumper for my daughter. I know I have read that SIDS significantly decreases after 6 months of age.

Re: Using bumper in crib

  • Thank you for your response! Btw, I LOVE your son's name! I really like that name a lot!

We haven't ever tried the bumper that came with our daugher's bedding because we were told to not have it in the crib due to SIDS possibly occurring but we

  • Another thing to think about with this.. a lot of babies that are climbers (probably still have some time before this is a concern) will use the bumper to leverage up and over the top of the crib...

  • Good point! Never thought of that! Thanks!
  • Thanks for the response! Never heard of that and I will keep that in mind! :)

  • My DD only rolls one way. She somehow moved over, rolled over and I found her face planted against the crib. If we had had a bumper, she likely would have suffocated in the bumper. As was, by the time she got worked up to panic cry, she had crib slat mark

  • Love our breathable mesh bumper from Walmart.
  • We have always had the bumpers in for both our boys in the crib.

DS1 was in the crib until he was 19 months old and never once tried to use them to climb out or anything like that.

DS2 never really moved much as a swaddled newborn, so bum

  • I use/d a breathable bumper with both boys and didn't use the padded bumper until we converted DS1's crib into a toddler bed and used it to keep him from falling out. He was 2 then.
  • Get mesh ones! I had to literally saw a slat out of my baby's crib two nights ago because her leg was completely wedged between two bars. My husband and I tried for a good 15 to 20 minutes to free her but it just wasn't happening. She got pretty panicked

  • I use the Wonder Bumpers by Go Mama Go Designs. They give me piece of mind and cushion her head (she had been hitting it on the slats regularly). The space between them isn't large enough for her to get a leg through, and she can't use them to climb.

  • I just got bumpers this week. DS was moving around so much, hitting his head, getting limbs stuck. Now, if he moves around he doesn't start crying because he hasn't hurt himself like he would have before the bumpers. I am not worried about him getting int

  • Our son is such an intense sleep mover we had to put a bumper in. He jams himself right up into the sides of the crib and really likes sleeping like that. If we didnt have bumpers in there he'd constantly be getting stuck. I would say as ling as she's abl
