Should I be worried DS isn't eating much?

He got a nasty stomach bug Friday night (puked a few times/had diarrhea on Sunday) and he's barely eating. Took to doctor and she said to keep pushing fluids but never really mentioned how long it would take for his appetite to rebound. Any ideas? My husband is scared to death because DS isn't eating (and he is very low energy because he's not eating, I think). I figured he'd be a little more hungry by now.

  • DH is a pedi and after LO pukes, he always says not to force food on her. When she asks for something, I give her a BRAT diet item. He won't waste away from not eating much for a few days. You could always offer a smoothie, which will have more substance,

  • This happened to my DD last month.  Pedi said she wasn't worried about the eating but I had to really push the fluids.  Pedi also said she'll eat when she feels like it.

Some days my DD survives on air and Thomas the Tank Engine.

  • I wouldn't worry. DS always takes a little while after having a stomach bug to go back to his normal eating.
  • I'd mostly be worried about fluids right now.  It might take him a few days to get hungry again.

  • Honestly, it took about 7 days for DS to start eating normally again after the stomach bug. As PP said, don't force food, just make sure they are getting enough fluids. It's hard not to worry but I always try to remember how I feel after I am sick.

  • It took DD a full week to get back to eating normally after a stomach bug.  I think as long as he's drinking enough(and our pedi said peeing at least 3 times a day), I wouldn't push extra food.
  • dd is like that after being sick! she takes at LEAST a week if not 2 to get back to normal eating

after a couple of days she'll go back to eating simple things like plain toast, plain pasta, boiled eggs

any food is good, but fluid is the MO
