Ack! We're visiting family next week and my 87 year old grandmother has shingles. She's been on meds for 5 days now, but my 10 month old hasn't had either of her chicken pox vaccines yet and my son has only had his first. The nurse at our pediatrician told me to keep them away from her. My heart sank when I heard this. She's going to be heartbroken. Anyone have experience with this? I need to call back and get clarification - does staying away from her mean, no touching or not in the same room altogether? Luckily we're staying with other family, but keeping her away from them is going to be awful.

Re: Kids and exposure to shingles
as long as they are scabbed over, and not open, there shouldn't be an issue. Our friend had them about a month ago and I freaked out because he didn't tell us when we hung out all day with our son there also.
I called our pedi, and s
I am anal, but I wouldn't have LO anywhere near shingles or chickenpox at this age.

Like PP said, if they are scabbed over and not open the contagious period is over.
I treated a patient with shingles when DD was 4 months old. I was concerned because I was always told to stay away from patients with shingles during my pregnancy
