Mema vs. Grandma

My MIL wants the baby to call her and my FIL Mema and Papa. My DH says that the baby will call them grandma and grandpa. Now it's becoming an issue with my SIL is saying that the grandparents get to choose what baby will call them and my DH saying that the parents should get to decide. I can see this getting blown up and there being some sort of all out argument because my SIL and MIL have to get their way or they throw a HUGE stink.

What do you guys think? Should the grandparents get to chose what the baby calls them or should the parents get to chose what the baby calls the grandparents?

Re: Mema vs. Grandma

  • I think it is getting majorly blown out of proportion. I would let my parents choose. Any reason your DH even cares?

  • my parents / in-laws chose.  it's not a big deal really.

  • We're letting our parents choose. My MIL was lukewarm about LO because she still has an 11 yr. old. But damnit, I'm 30 and I'm not waiting for her, lol. Since she isn't sure she will be comfortable being a 'grandma' we thought letter her choose might s

  • I agree about it getting blown out of proportion. My DH says it's because it's tradition and that's what he always called his grandparents.
  • I would say the grandparents choose, but the kids will call them what they want. I mean my grandma somehow got the name gramma bob because I guess I couldn't say her name haha. So I'd just give it to them, and teach your kids in secret what to call them.

  • Sometimes no one picks because the kiddos do. My dad swore up and down I would call my MiMi grandma. What do I call her?? Mimi. So in that case I chose. I think the grandparents should be able to choose what THEY want to be called. It's their name they h
  • Grandparents get to choose.
  • For me when I was little, I kind of chose what I called my grandparents.  My grandfather wanted to be called "Grandpa" and I just ended up calling him "paw-paw" and it stuck.  Apparently they tried to force the word "Grandpa" on me a lot but it

  • This has been a thing with my family too. I always called my grandparents grandma and grandpa. We differentiated the sides by where they lived. I don't really like the made up nicknames. I told them I'd prefer it if they let my son call them what he wants

  • I wish I could have chosen for my MIL.  She picked Mimi.  Which irritates me because she spells it MiMi.  She also spells Mom as MoM.  Of course, thinking about it - most everything she does irritates me.  Poor old lady!

  • I let the grandparents choose. My mom and dad wanted DD to choose so we referred to them as grandma and grandpa until she named them nana and pop pop. It's adorable that she chose it and they take a deep pride in their names!

  • The initial choice should be the grandparents'. Ultimately, the child is going to choose.
