stopping naps

DS has always been a regular napper.  He would go to sleep fine, and sleep 2 or more hours.  In the last year, he has probably missed his nap 4 times - up until a week or so ago.  He has totally been fighting going down, either throwing a tantrum when I leave or just constantly calling for me.  Sometimes he'll settle down and chat to himself, sometimes he'll just keep flipping out.  He's probably only gone to sleep 3 days out of the last 10.  And those are days that he's been having long tantrum and finally tires out.  I am not going to go in there to try to settle him or do anything like that because I know that will make it worse.  If he has not slept, I will go get him after 2 hours.

So does this mean all of the sudden he is over napping?  Do I just stop putting him down?  I have a feeling if I stop doing the regular nap routine with him, he will never take a nap again even if he needs it.  I have just been thinking he is going through a phase and will realize that he needs to be in there for a couple hours so may as well rest.  How do I know if he's really done with it and then do I just go cold turkey or what?  Thanks for your input!

  • I refuse to let naps go, refuse.   So, when LO starts going a few days without napping I typically wake him up a bit earlier if I can and that usually helps reset his "nap clock"

I'm also very careful to make sure he doesn't nap past a

  • My plan with DD, who is doing something similar in not napping as often (but not tantrumming - probably because I usually nap with her so am in the room) is to do quiet time instead of nap time (but at the same time of day).  After we have a large nu

  • Do you think your LO could be thrown off his routine due to daylight savings time last week?  My kids are still messed up from it.  I would keep with the nap routine a bit longer, try waking him up earlier in the morning or moving bedtime later.
