My 3.5 yr old DD is an overall very well behaved child. However, her table manners are absolutely terrible. She wants to use her fingers to eat all the time, despite us constantly telling her to use her utensils. She will use them for a little bit, but then go right back to using her fingers. She also wants to do everything but eat at the dinner table. She sings, spins around in her chair, plays with her food, paws at us, etc .It is so embarrasing when we have guests. We are very consistent at correcting her and telling her that her behavior is inappropriate. It just never seems to matter to her. Normally, we send her to time out for behavior issues, but it seems like if we send her to time out for dinner issues, she just gets what she wants - not having to sit at the dinner table and eat nicely. Anyone have similar problems or suggestions? Nothing seems to work with her on this issue. We have been battling with this issue her whole life!

Re: Need Suggestions for Terrible Table Manners
Our daughter is 3 1/2, too. Every now and then her manners at the table aren't great.&nbs
We just take the plate away and let him sit there while we eat. If you are going to play in your food then you must not be hungry. He usually gets a second chance after about 2-3 min, but if it happens again then breakfast comes soon enough.
<sorry to say I have a 3 1/2 yr old who also still much prefers to eat with his hands. He knows how to use utensils, he uses them at daycare but I think it just easier & faster for him at home. We struggle w/ it b/c it is tiresome to be all over him
