Hi there. I'm more of a lurker than anything, but I had some concerns about my OB and my perceived GD. (And sorry for the length).
I was having some weird symptoms a while back, so I pushed for an early OGTT (I was 15 weeks at the time, 20 weeks tomorrow). Main reason is that I have PCOS and was on metformin prior to pregnancy, but my OB made me get off it at my first appointment (6 weeks pregnant). I failed the 1 hr test by more than a couple points, but not enough to say I failed it BADLY. I had a bad reaction to the glucose drink, so OB skipped ahead and had me start doing 4x a day testing (not fun, I tell you).
Now, I was given no guidelines or whatever on diet or what numbers I was looking for, so I did my best and found what info I could using Dr. Google. I tested for two weeks, and based off the info that I had gleaned, I thought I did really well. I never once had my fasting go over 95 (I had one at 92, but the rest were in the 70s and 80s). For my two hour post meal numbers, I stuck mostly in the 80s and 90s, with a few random exceptions (like when I was sick as a dog) but everything stayed below 110.
So I bring this info in for OB and she is NOT happy. Apparently, she doesn't go by the 120 cut off for the two hour, but a 105 cutoff, and she doesn't even like numbers getting near 100. Am I crazy to think this is a bit too low? I had started off with a big reduction in carbs, but I ended up having some issues with hypoglycemia, so I had to increase and those were the numbers I got. So, she put me back on metformin (same dose I was prior) and my numbers have gotten somewhat worse (I don't know if it's from the GI upset or what), of course, they're still below that 120 number that I keep running into online.
I have another appointment on Wednesday and she said if she didn't see improvements then she's upping my metformin dose (and I'm still dealing with the GI distress from the lower dose). What should I do? I only have a couple more appointments with this OB over the next few weeks before I move out of state...should I follow her advice until then and see what new OB says (won't be seen until Apr. 24) or what? I would go see my Endo (I have an autoimmune thyroid thing as well), but she's out of town until after I leave and no other OB in this town will see me (work politics..ugh).
TIA for everyone's advice!
Re: Is it really GD?
Blood sugar peaks at 1 hour, so I really don't know why some people are still testing at 2 hours. Your OB sounds realistic to me. This is link to what normal blood sugar during pregnancy looks like, and what you should optimally strive for with GD. Any
*shrugs* I've had issues with this OB from the beginning. Hubby considers her a "quack". I tried switching to another OB, but unfortunately all the ones that take my insurance in this town are in the same medical group (but not practice) and they
I wouldn't wait till you move. Sorry your OB is a quack.
It does not sound like you have an issue. Both of the OB's I have seen have set guidelines just like you found on your search. My new OB actually has a 100 for fasting and 130 for 2 hour. I have been keeping track of mine and have always been und
