Nipple cream safe for preemies?

Hi ladies,

My sister-in-law is being induced this weekend at 27 weeks.  She didn't breastfeed her first son, but I know she wants to pump for the new baby.  I am putting together some things that made pumping easier and more comfortable for me.  One thing I want to include is a nipple cream/ointment.  I used Earth Mama Angel Baby for my full-term son and liked it, but I am wondering if there are any health concerns with using this for a preemie.  Is there a better/safer alternative?  Should I not buy anything and have her check with the NICU doctor first?

Thank you for the help!

Re: Nipple cream safe for preemies?

  • I would think that Earth Mama Angel Baby would be fine to use. My understanding is that any cream that is safe for any baby would be safe for a preemie. Plus that is a great brand so I wouldn't worry about there being anything weird in it.

The NICU LC told me it was fine. I used the lanSinoh cream though. I am sure it is fine but you can always tell her to double check before using it.

  • When we were still in NICU, I used the Medela Tender Care lanolin ointment and the nurses said it was safe to leave on during pumping.

  • Something that I found really relieving were the lansinoh soothies gel pads. They're reusable and much cleaner than any nipple cream/ointment I tried. I did always wipe myself down before pumping though.
