Great convertible car seat for TALL baby

Hi all -

My daughter is almost a year old and is quickly outgrowing her infant car seat.  Any recommendations for a convertible car seat for a tall baby/toddler?  She is in the 97% for height!  Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • We love our Clek Foonf for my very tall baby. It's expensive but it's a great fit for him, has very high rear facing height and weight limits and the safety features are second to none.

  • Alrighty! My DD is also crazy tall and I did tons of research. She actually outgrew her convertible about 2 months ago. I went with 2 different carseats (also made sure they fit well in not humongous vehicles). Here what I ended up with:

For my DH's late model-2007 Silverado extended pick up: Evenflo Symphony 65 E3 All in One Car Seat, Cicero - $173.39 (price varies depending on color) -because it's in a truck it needs to be forward facing, even though it's in the back, so I can't speak to using it rear-facing.

For my 2012 subaru legacy: Recaro ProRIDE Convertible Car Seat, Envy - $223.00 (price varies depending on color) - installed rear-facing, have more than enough room in the passenger seat.

I love mine and DH loves his. I went with these due to the high height allowances, the ability to raise the straps without re-threading (as easy as turning a crank or squeezing and lifting), the ease of installing (both super easy), the fit-abilty in our vehicles, ability to wash covers (Recaro might be hand-wash, though), reviews (both personal and safety) and price. I bought both through Amazon so that if need-be there would be no issues returning them. Also got free shipping, and they arrives in about 3 days. DD seems very comfy in both.

    Hope this info helps! Smile

  • If your budget is unlimited, check out the Foonf.  Otherwise, the Graco MySize/Headwise/Size4Me have the tallest shells on the market and will likely last your child the longest out of any other seat.  Diono Radians also have tall shells and will last awhile (but are not known to make good boosters).  I would be wary of the Recaro mentioned by PP because it's known to have the least amount of legroom for rear facing children.  You could also check out the Chicco Nextfit that just came out - looks nice and roomy and has shell height that is almost comparable to the Gracos I mentioned.
  • I would look at the Evenflo SureRide, Safety 1st Guide 65, Graco MySize/Size4Me/Headwise, Diono Radian and if your budget allows... the Foonf.

Also, the prior poster is incorrect about her seat needing to be forward facing. That is completely false and actually deadly at this age.

You can check out the fb group Car Seats for the Littles. There are a ton of car seat techs in the group, including myself. Plus, you can see real life photos and reviews of all different seats, see how they might fit in your vehicle, etc.

You need to follow up on the law for forward facing.  I know nothing about trucks but I do know that the law is a minimum of 20 pounds AND 1 year and that is the barest minimum and still not safe by newer standards.

  • We have a Graco 3-way convertible seat.  Gabriel loves it!  It's pricey, but will last all of the way through the booster seat stage.  He's in the 100% for height...so I totally get it!  It's a bigger seat when rear facing, so if you have a smaller car you may have to measure for room.  We have a small suv and it works great!

If you're talking about the SmartSeat, I would not recommend this for a tall baby. It is typically outgrown early for RF, and outgrown for FF shortly after. There are way better options for the price.

If you like Graco, the MySize is an awesome choice. It has the tallest shell on the market and will last your child for several years.
