Others who have dealt with speech delays...
My son is 2 1/2 and only speaks a handful of words. I have talked with our family physician who tells me that each child advances in their own time (I am not getting any support where the doctor is concerned). I am worried though as he is slipping farther behind each day from where his speech level should be. I am in the process of having him evaluated for the birth to 3 program. I am just looking for advice from other mothers who have had children with speech delays. What steps have you taken? What has worked best for your child? Etc... Thanks for your help.

We noticed the delay early but DS was already in the early intervention for PT.
I requested him to be evaluated through the program. The speech therapist came out and evaluated him and took notes. At the time he only said

Yeah, you need to get in to early intervention. Keep in mind that only goes until they are 3 yrs old. Then he'll be evaluated by the school district and possibly placed in their "special education" preschool program. It's been the BES

Going in for an evaluation should help give you some clarity. We got DD into speech therapy at 3 yrs old (we were too late for the "free" First Steps program) and we had to pay $100 out of pocket for each session since insurance didn't cover it.&
first of all, i would switch pediatrians since clearly yours is so incompetent in child development. i'm angry for you that your pediatrician let your child go this long with so little language while still telling you it's ok.
