Feeding schedule imortance?

I was told by the nurses in the hospital, that it's very important to be on a schedule of feeding my little man. They said every 3-4 hours. That just does not seem to be the way he's wired. He's 6 and a half days old, but he's only went 4 hours once, 3 hours a couple times. The others have been 2 to 2 and a half.

Except for at night, when I get him. (Wife's a morning person, I'm a night owl, neither of us work.) I didn't keep track in the hospital, but have since we've been home. Last night he went an hour and a half before getting fussy, and nothing helped, so I finally tried feeding. He latched on to that bottle fastest than I've seen yet. Tonight he went an hour before getting fussy. Two diaper changes (he doesn't like to pee and poo in the same one) then mellowed out. 5 minutes later he was fussy, and took the bottle without hesitation. So tonight it was 1 hour and 15 minutes between feedings.

He does this on milk pumped into a bottle or formula.

  • Feed babies on demand!  They usually eat every 1.5-2 hrs at that age, especially breastmilk since it digests quicker.  Baby's tummy is the size of a walnut, so he shouldn't be eating much per feeding and it empties quickly.  I think what

  • Thanks, I'll take a look at the link. Breastfeeding really didn't work very well when we tried at the hospital. Haven't tried at all at home, but the pump works pretty well.

  • My DD was taking the same amount of formula as your LO, now she is 14 days old and has moved up to 2ozs. every 2hrs. I never followed a strict schedule with my son and let him eat whenever he was hungry, as often as he wanted. It was never an issue.

  • When the nurses tell new parents to feed their babies every 3 to 4 hours they should specify at least that much, as in... If your newborn is a sleepy guy and wants to pass out for eight hours as some newborns do, you should wake and feed him after four. D

  • Meh, my son is almost 3 months old and he is still fed on demand. It's starting to shape into every 3 hours, but sometimes its more or less. If he is hungry I will feed him. I'm not going to let him lay around and cry because it hasn't been 3 hours. Th

Your nurse was an incompetent idiot and I would certainly file a complaint about her and her very dangerous advice

  • Just wanted to say we stayed feeding him when he wants how much he wants. He seems happy again.
  • Totally normal. My DD was about 2.5 hours

(Also you count the time from start of feeding to start of feeding - so if he feeds at 2:00 for 30 minutes, you count from 2:00 not 2:30)

They just don't want you to let baby go more than 3-4 hour
