  I would say it depends on what you are planning to use it for. My kids are 3 1/2 and their backpacks (wildkin brand)  are about 10"wide x 13" high. They were a bit big on them until age 3 or so, but I used them for things like car trips to hold sm

  Like the previous poster said, you can't fit a folder in the mini.  We actually opted for the LL Bean Junior backpack.  It's perfect for my 3 year old and she'll easily carry it through Kindergarten.

  My DD has the mini and she is 2. You can't put a full sized piece of paper in it though so I would say not good for preschool. DD uses it for them gym. I pack a sippy a toy and some diapers.
