One & Done: Only child

Intro and thank you!

How did I not know this board existed?  I supposed I should log on more often!

DS is 4.5. Up to this point, we have been completely at peace with our decision to be OaD. Many factors like age, economy, health and pregnancy complications contributed to that decision.  DS is a wonderfully sweet and bright child and our family feels complete.

However, the questions have begun.  We've explained to DS that families come in all different sizes and ours is perfect just the way it is.  It breaks my heart when he tears up over not having siblings. We go out of our way to make sure that DS has lots of friends, lots of playdates, and he has lots of family, but I know it's just not the same. The fact that he's so focused on it right now is upsetting.  I know in time he'll better understand why, but seeing him cry now is heartbreaking  :-(

I'm amazed by how many times I'm publicly confronted by friends and family, often right in front of DS, "You need to give him a brother or sister!". I think it's natural for people to just assume that additional children will come and I try not to be snarky, but I hate having to defend our decision and even more, the damage control we have to do with DS later,

Reading all of these supportive posts makes me feel much less alone, so thank you . :-)

  • Hi and welcome! I'm sorry your DS gets upset. A few of our ds's friends have siblings. He hasn't asked why he doesn't have any. I'm interested to see how others answer that question.

  • My DD is the same age (9/2008) and loves being an only, she gets so much attention.  After an afternoon with her cousins, she is glad to be home and doing her own thing.  She is a little introverted and shy, just like her DH and me at that age.

  • Yes, she is inward looking and concerned about her own self, obviously a very common childhood personality quality.

    Yes, she is shy.

  • Hi & Welcome!

My DS is asking about siblings occasionally now, too. Per advice, I'll just keep saying that families come in all different sizes. Hopefully that will work.
