Hospital bumping...maybe for the duration (long)

I had a kidney transplant in 2004. My labs were OK when I got pregnant, and held that way for quite a bit. That is, until last Friday or so.

I was sent to the hospital last Thursday to make sure a small abcess wasn't an infection, since I'm high-risk. I had called my OB because its appearance came with nausea and weakness. They swabbed it and sent me home.

The next day, I wasn't peeing. I figured I was dehydrated from the previous day and still not feeling well. Sent to the hospital again, and this time they drew some blood.

My nephrologist (kidney doctor) is at a hospital about two hours away, and my OBs insisted I was flown there, Not what I anticipated for my first helicopter ride.

This is where things got really scary. My husband had to drive, so I arrived by myself. The OBs here apparently weren't aware of my kidney condition, or didn't understand it, and tell me my only option is to deliver because I have pre-eclampsia and baby isn't going to make it (I was 22w2d).

I told them that wasn't happening and they needed to talk to my kidney doctor, and they weren't even familiar with the name! Thankfully, the head OB came in and found my kidney doctor. The thing is, my kidney symptoms are just like pre-e. So my case is confusing and new for even the doctors here.

I was in ICU for a bit, but now I'm in the OB unit. We're doing dialysis every day and monitoring labs closely. They have a few theories on what's going on with my kidney, but won't know for sure until after baby gets here.

Thankfully, baby Owen seems completely unfazed, His heart rate is strong and steady, right where it needs to be. Even though I have an anterior placenta, I feel him kick just about all day long, and we can see his kicks!

We're still in wait-and-see mode as far as a long-term plan, but it's a "strong possibility" I'll be here until I deliver. It seems likely he'll be born pretty early, but I'm doing my best to keep him in as long as possible. The OBs seem OK with following my lead so long as I don't get sicker.

This hospital's NICU is level IV, the highest, so that's reassuring too.

I've been around this board for quite a bit, but very rarely post (so my username is probably not familiar to most. haha). But please keep baby Owen in your thoughts. Thanks!!

  • Oh my goodness, that is so scary! T&P for you and baby Owen, the idea of being stuck at the hospital for the next 3-4 months isn't fun, but if it keeps you both healthy then it's worth it. I hope your kidneys decide to rally, but it's good to know you
