I'm making my very first diaper cake... any opinions on what makes a diaper cake look good?
Specifically, I'm either going to wrap each layer with a big ribbon and a smaller ribbon on top, or wrap each layer in colored tissue paper with one ribbon on top of that.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Re: Diaper Cakes
I made one for a friend a few months ago. Her colors were grey and yellow so I used wide yellow ribbon with smaller grey ribbon on top. I think it's cute to add small baby items for decorations which are also useful. I went with a "bath theme" and added a little yellow rubber duck on the top layer, and mini bottles of Johnson's shampoo and body wash on the other 2 layers (all yellow to match)
other ideas would be soothers, spoons, small toys etc.
I've made a lot of diaper cakes and have either wrapped double ribbon around the diapers directly, or I wraps the layers in a receiving blanket or towel, and then tie the ribbon around that. A tip on ribbon is that a textured one, like grosgrain, is much less slippery than the satin ones. I also like to use double side tape to stick socks and mittens around the layer to the ribbon. I tuck small items like diaper cream and nail clippers into the ribbon.
You don't have to limit yourself to rolled diapers, I've also used rolled burp cloths, rolled wash clothes, layers of receiving blankets, etc.
I usually try to pick a theme, like buy sheets from the bedding set to wrap a layer and top with a sleep sheep or stuffed animal, or a bath theme and wrap in towels and top with a bath mitt and toys.
Another tip, get a plastic charger plate from Michales or Party City and use it as the base. It's a nice size circle for the base and makes it easier to transport.
I will be grouchy with you! They are weird looking and I don't want someone manhandling my babies diapers!
I'm with the rest of you. They can look really cool and all but they're not very practical.
I'll be grouchy with you. I think they are silly. What am I going to do with it anyway...just use it. My sister got 2 at her shower and then afterwards we stood around and took them apart. Waste of time:)
If you want an alternative - I made one similar to this for my sister's shower last month. The nice thing about it is that you don't roll and pin the diapers. They are held together by a rubber band, so all she had to do was remove the rubber band and the diapers were flat again.

I like to use baby items on my diaper cakes. So, I roll up washcloths around chenille stems, to make snails... I also use bibs to make butterflies, by cinching in the middles and using chenille stems to make the antennae and so on... I also tie on teethers, or whatever other small baby items I'd like to give to the mom...
Sometimes I make the diapers into diaper babies instead. This takes a pack of the mittens, booties, a bib, a hat, and a pacifier!
I am attaching pictures for you to see as examples if it works!!

Here's a pic of the diaper babies:
Hope those help a little!!
the ribbons you use and the plush doll at the top.
make sure it falls in line with the rest of the baby shower theme.
You're all crazy grouches.
They are super practical I've made them with different sized diapers so that when your baby grows, you already have the next size on hand to try out before buying a new case or without having to make a latenight run.
The extra little decorations are fun. You can fold baby socks into roses to look more like real cake decorations.
The one we received used a bottle of wine wrapped in a baby blanket as the center/base, which I thought was genius both for the ease of construction put a rubber band around the bottle and tuck in the rolled diapers and for the awesome surprise when you work your way through the cake.
