Toddlers: 24 Months+

When did your toddler start listening?

DD is 20 months. I'm curious when other's children really started listening.

She listens fine when its something that she is ok with....like when I ask her to get a book, give hugs and kisses, help clean up, etc.

But she does not listen at all when I ask her to sit on the chair instead of stand, not to climb on top of the toilet, not to sit on the dog, etc. Basically all the stuff that I would prefer she not do mostly for safety reasons...if that makes sense. I've asked, tried distraction, tried getting her to do something else instead.

I know that kids are made to test the limits, and that she's still learning what is ok and not ok. So when does it start getting a little better? When did you feel like you stopped saying "no" all the time....or maybe you still do?! ;

  • listening, complying, either way hahahhahahah. Sorry, I have 2 that are 3 1/2 and I'm pretty sure the answer is never. It will just change over time which things they will & will not 'listen' to.
  • Yeah.. hasn't happened yet. I feel your pain though!
  • DD was pretty compliant starting around 18 mo till prob almost till 3. Now it's like I have a completely different child. I had heard people say that 3 was worse than 2 and boy were they right! Some things like nap and bedtime have gotten easier, but now

  • Once he turned 2 it got easier.  He seems to really want to be a "people pleaser" right now.

     I've heard 3 is rough though so I am not anticipating this lasting long.

  • DD has definitely gotten a lot better at listening since the age of 2... but I feel like we are doing a bit of a slide backwards again as we near the age of 3. Independent little bugger.

  • my son was really young--probably around 1.5. he's just a people pleaser by nature though so i think it's more temperament vs parenting.

    my daughter is much tougher. two was definitely a turning point especially since she started actually underst

    Pretty young. I know I had her start picking up her toys at 12 months, and she's great about it.  Shes a very compliant kid in general though, and I go crazy with praise and cheering her on when she listens.  She's 25 months, and has just discov

  • Still saying no all the time!  And now it's not because he doesn't know things are wrong - it's because he doesn't care and wants to do them anyway!
