Babies: 9 - 12 Months

feeding himself, but not with pincher grasp

We've started offering finger foods in the last two weeks, and DS is getting the hang of it now, but, does not use a pincher grasp. He grabs with his whole fist, then puts about half his fist in his mouth, then I assume gets the food out with his tongue. I know in time the pincher grasp will come, but just curious, was this how your LO started out, and then eventually started pincher grasping? Not stressing, just curious how this usually goes. PS - do you undress your LO for meals? My son gets SO much food on himself, even with a bib. Thinking about going nakey+diaper if we're at home:) I don't care about the mess, but seriously have to change his outfit everytime!

Re: feeding himself, but not with pincher grasp

  • Seems normal. My LO seems to go back and forth between, but prefers licking off palm.

  • I just realized the other day that DD, 9.5months, actually does have a pincer grasp but she still shovels food in with her whole hand.

  • My LO did this for a few weeks and then he started with the pincher grasp. I bet it will happen within the next few weeks :-)
