The Blind Side

I have a long commute, and typically listen to audio books while I drive.  I just listened to two books about the Michael Oher story that I thought were pretty good.

The first was written by the Tuohys, and is called

In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving.  It is the story from their perspective, as well as their missile to urge people to do more charitable giving.  I know that makes it sound as if they believed that they were doing charity when they took Oher in, but I assure you, that's not how it comes across.  In fact, I'm truly inspired to make a concious act of giving more frequently and freely in little ways and give their "popcorn theory" a try.

The second book was Michael Oher's own

I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond.  Both books were very sentimental and sometimes made me tear up, but after hearing this book, I have a whole new respect for Michael Oher, well beyond what I did just from The Blind Side.  This guy is committed to ensuring his future security to the point of actively not making typical mistakes of people who suddenly "come-into-riches."  More importantly, his book was written to inspire children in tough situations to know they can make it out and to inspire adults everywhere to help them.  It's his story about life mostly before joining the Touhy family, but also his guide to getting out.

I highly recommend both.  One thing that come through in both books and I'm thoroughly convinced of now is that Michael Oher was not delayed educationally (aside from having dyslexia), but just behind, because he spent so much of his youth not in school or in schools that just passed him along.  The guy is actually quite bright and it was somewhat an invention of Michael Lewis to depict him as a slow learner.

Re: The Blind Side

  • Sounds like 2 great books! I think my husband would really like the second one. I have always loved his story. It kind of makes me think about the poster on this board who is in the process of adopting a young man.
