Here we do a gift for the shower and money or the wedding. That's traditional and everyone does it that way in my area. From what I've seen around the bump/knot it seem like it really depends on the region.
a gift for the shower & a check for the wedding. however, one of my favorite wedding gifts was an engraved frame with a pic. from the ceremony of our kiss, she'd gotten printed before the reception.
I give something off the registry for the shower and typically and established sign with cash for the wedding. I try to match their style with the sign... If I don't know their style I stay clear of the sign and I give cash.
I usually give a gift for the shower and a check for the wedding.
