2nd Trimester

already 75% effaced?!

So we had our 24-week appointment today and my OB told us that while I'm not dialted, my cervix is already 75% effaced! She is concerned and told me that I need to stop all activity. No gym, no vaccuming, no sex, no nothing except going to work then coming home to rest. She said she wants to check me again in 2 weeks and if I'm dilated at all then, it's bed rest for me. Sucks. Anyone else ever have this with previous children or now?

Re: already 75% effaced?!

  • Out of curiousity, why are they checking your cervix already?  Were you having contractions?
  • Loading the player...
  • Whoa. Why did she even check so early?
  • My cervix was effaced when I went to the hospital at 17 weeks for preterm labor.  I had a follow up at 21 weeks and I'm still not dialated which is good.  I'm still on modified bedrest and pelvic rest.  I have another scan after xmas.

    this.

  • uh oh... I don't even know what effaced means... I better get back to reading up on stuff!!

Hope you don't have to go on bed rest!

  • Wow - what do you do as work if you don't mind me asking?

'Cause maybe on the saftey side you should cut down work.

Braxton Hicks? I am really curious, b/c I get these all the time and I've never been checked.

  • I'm a medical student :) Funny how my medical knowledge and logic has flown out the window with my own pregnancy. Luckily I;m on a farily light rotation right now.

I assumed they were BH and was surprised when my OB told me that no one should be having contractions this early. I had read/heard otherwise. I haven't had more than 5/hour or anything, but do get some every day. Guess it just depends on the MD when they decide if they think you should be checked.

I have always gotten more of these than the average person, and my OB has never checked me for them.  The only time they will check is if there is a pattern to them and more than 6 in an hour.

  • It sounds like I am in the same boat. My doc saw that my cervix was shortening on my big U/S and my activity is restricted currently and pelvic rest etc. I have a follow up U/S in a little less than 2 weeks.

I don't really have any advice as this is new for me too. I hope we both get good news at our follow up appts.!

  • I wish you the best and make sure you follow doctor's orders!

  • Hey, I missed this post earlier, but I wanted to still reply.  I have been on bed rest since 21.5 weeks for similiar reasons - contractions and dilating.  I was put on extremely limited activty at first but then it did turn into bed rest at my next appt.  I'm not going to lie, the bed rest is not fun, but it is so important to keep our babies in there as long as possible.  Page me if you want to talk more and keep me updated on how things go at your follow-up.
